ND had a bunch of Catholic fans wayway before that

My grandfather (1864-1941) and my Dad (1900-1985) became ND fans when ND beat Army with the forward pass in 1913, after they read in the paper about this little Catholic school beating the mighty Cadets with this crazy idea of throwing the football.

My Dad, my uncles, my older cousins and older siblings all were ND fans back in the days of radio and newspapers, long before Hornung and Nelson, indeed before television.

Rockne, The Four Horseman, George Gipp, Frank Leahy, all established ND as a national program with lots of fans nationwide long before those Sunday highlight shows.

Long before I was born in 1957, ND had coast to coast fans.

Hell, ND had a national TV contract with the Dumont Network in 1950 before the NCAA extorted it into giving up its individual TV rights.

Those fans were already well in place before then.
